This three credit three week course focuses on studying the causes and consequences of migration from and through Central America, specifically in Panama. It addresses issues of climate change and sustainability, such as food insecurity, flooding and hurricanes, disease outbreaks, ethnic-based inequalities, as well as violence in the region with a particular focus on policy solutions and mitigation and adaptation responses to climate change. It explores the role of economic development and public policy, the role of businesses and social corporate responsibility, and the implications of undocumented migration to neighboring countries and to the United States. Students will have the opportunity to explore Panama by engaging with the local communities in Panama City, Panama and other areas of Panama.
