For the Summer & Spring 2022 photo contest, we asked students to submit photos that they felt best portrayed the following themes: Academic Pursuit, Cultures & International Friendships, ND Irish Abroad, and Scenes from Abroad. Academic Pursuit
Exhibit creativity, innovation, and interaction in the pursuit of intellectual interests by engaging in class activities, international research, and/or internships.

For a program day trip, we visited the Memory and Human Rights Museum in downtown Santiago. The stories and documents that were shown conveyed deep emotion and we learned more about the violent dictatorship Chile experienced in the late 1900s. This wall shows some images of thousands of people who were murdered or disappeared during the Pinochet dictatorship, a powerful reminder of the terror and loss that Chileans experienced.

My classmates and I learned about Integral Ecology at the Bethany Land Institute, and here we are making a compost pile with discarded plants, animal manure and water, all sourced from the farm on site.

Casey Sicuso, Kylemore Summer 2024
This photo was taken during a culinary internship at Notre Dame global center in Kylemore Abbey. Chef Damian, originally from Derry in Northern Ireland, and I are making a simple butter sauce to roast beef in for dinner while our visitors finish up breakfast. Damian is a master smoker who was kind enough to take me under his wing and teach me everything from how to chop things correctly to how to create incredible dishes such as smoked pork belly with pineapple salsa.

I happened by a 100+ year old wood workshop while exploring Toledo. Luis, the owner, is a third generation craftsman and the only such woodworker left in Toledo.

Sophia Buonavolonta, Santiago Spring 2024
This is the church of Machuca in the Atacama Desert. This small town is home to fewer than 50 residents. The church is around 500 years old, dating back to the Spanish colonization of Chile. Despite the centuries that have passed and the small size, this church still is a beautiful place of Catholic worship.
ND Irish Abroad
Show off your ND pride abroad in your host country by featuring Notre Dame in some way.

On a trip to the Atacama Desert in Chile’s northern region, otherwise known as the driest place on Earth, I stopped to pose with a group of llamas and alpacas on the side of the road while sporting my ND 1972 hat and Irish Strong shirt.

The first India Summer cohort at the Kanheri Caves! These Buddhist caves were constructed during the 1st century CE and 10th century CE and contain Buddhist sculptures, carvings, paintings, and inscriptions.

Hiking towards the Torres in the Chilean Patagonia of Torres del Paine, we learned that these famous peaks were formed through years of glacier erosion and are composed of granite rock. Additionally, the trees surrounding the path tell the story of wildfires and recovering wildlife.

This is a photograph from Itsukushima Shrine, a Shinto shrine on the island of Miyajima near Hiroshima. This shrine is famous for the floating Torii gates in the water. I selected this photo because I like how the buildings around it frame the gates.
