This 4-week intensive Creative Writing Seminar is taught by distinguished Notre Dame faculty, Dionne Bremyer, and by world-renowned Irish playwright and professor Marina Carr, who will encourage students to find their writing voice & connect to larger issues in contemporary writing.
The course will feature creative writing instruction including lectures, discussions, workshopping, and critiques of students' work. In the setting of Kylemore and Galway, students will reflect upon their peers' fiction, poetry, scripts and/or hybrid writing. Students will explore the west of Ireland through the cultural immersion program and a wide variety of excursions through Yeats’ homeland and along the wild Atlantic way.
The course will also include discussion of published works and literary events, as well as master classes led by renowned Irish writers, which in the past have included Claire Keegan and Kevin Barry. Writing assignments will include short exercises, longer weekly projects, and a final portfolio of revised work. Students will also be graded on reading responses and class critiques. Themes that will be discussed will be ghosts, hearing voices, climate, landscape, and contemplation. Readings in multiple genres will help showcase the role of the U.S./ Irish writer in a global context. Students will have had the ample time and space to work and develop their craft.
