Consider ways to leverage what you’ve learned and continue your involvement after you’ve returned to campus.
Academically and Professionally
- Contact the Meruelo Family Center for Career Development to identify internships or jobs that would tie into your experience abroad or for help incorporating your study abroad experience in a cover letter or a resume.
- Take coursework, such as language classes or courses offered by the Keough School for Global Affairs, that connects to your study abroad location. Conduct research for your senior thesis or capstone project that relates to your study abroad experience.
- Get involved in various centers or student clubs on campus, such as:
- Center for the Study of Languages & Cultures including the Globally Engaged Citizens Program and trainings on Intercultural Development
- Center for Social Concerns
- Department of Romance Languages Clubs and Organizations
- East Asian Languages and Cultures Clubs and Organizations
- Seek out scholarships and additional opportunities for study, language learning, or research abroad through the Flatley Center for Undergraduate Scholarly Engagement.
- Reach out to your Study Abroad Program Director for ways to get involved with student recruitment efforts, events and pre-departure preparation.
- Apply to be an NDG Senior Fellow for Internationalization.
- Write about it:
- Submit a reflection about your experience to Cory Hankins for possible publication on the Study Abroad website and/or in the Study Abroad Newsletter.
- Submit an article about your abroad experience to The Observer, Scholastic Magazine, or The South Bend Tribune.
- Stay informed about news and events in your host country:
- Read the local news from your host country on-line
- Listen to podcasts
- Visit the Hesburgh Library newspaper and magazine section
Socially
- Tour the Snite Museum of Art or the Art Institute of Chicago to enjoy art and artifacts from the country where you studied or traveled.
- Attend or host a program reunion with your fellow returnees.
- Participate in events hosted by NDG during International Education Week in November.
- Create a photo album or website about your semester or year abroad. Submit a photo to the NDG Photo Contest.
- Stay connected to friends, host families, professors and others you met while abroad via social media, What’sApp, text messages, emails, or old-fashioned letter writing.
