Nine students will travel to Ireland’s west coast this fall to participate in a new immersive Notre Dame International program in Galway City, Ireland.

Students will take classes on the campus of The National University of Ireland – Galway (NUIG), which ranks among the top 2% of universities in the world.

“This new collaboration and study abroad program helps broaden Notre Dame’s reach in Ireland,” said Lisa Caulfield, director of the Notre Dame Centre at Kylemore “We’re excited to partner with a well-established and dynamic university on the west coast.”

The university, an easy drive from the Notre Dame Centre at Kylemore, is renowned for its medical school, biomedical science programs, engineering programs, as well as programs in the arts and Irish language.

The Galway NUIG program will offer a unique opportunity to Notre Dame students, allowing them to enroll in credit-bearing courses through NUIG’s College of Sciences. These courses are appropriate for pre-professional majors, including neuroscience.

Students will be able to take courses in Irish language and culture as well as other courses that may fulfill university requirements.

“The academic programs and facilities are cutting edge,” said Kathleen Opel, director of study abroad at Notre Dame International. “Our students will be deeply immersed in Irish society and culture on a picturesque campus and dramatic landscape that represents the beautiful medieval city of Galway.”

While the first cohort of students will be heading to Galway for the fall semester, ten students are enrolled in the program for Spring 2019.

The new partnership with NUIG expands Notre Dame International’s reach beyond Dublin to a world-renowned university that provides a broad range of options for the many Notre Dame students in Ireland each year. NDI has partnered with Trinity College Dublin and University College Dublin for more than twenty years.

The Dublin Global Gateway hosts an average of forty-five students each semester, offering academic programs and summer internships for both undergraduate and graduate students.

The Notre Dame Centre at Kylemore works closely with the Dublin Global Gateway to help broaden Notre Dame’s engagement with Ireland. The Centre is located in St. Joseph’s Hall, a building adjacent to the main Abbey building on the Kylemore Abbey Estate.
