Why did you choose this study abroad program? I chose to participate in Brazil: A Social Mosaic, because I am interested in learning more about Afro-Brazilian culture and the diversity of lifestyles and backgrounds in South America. As someone extremely passionate about civil and human rights, I look forward to learning how to engage with individuals of different backgrounds and understand their challenges, as well as observe the importance of identity in political orientations and public policymaking around the world. Furthermore, as a Global Affairs major the rich culture of Brazil is in itself an opportunity to immerse myself and learn more about the people, their heritage, and the struggles for civil rights that they face whether regarding race, gender, immigration, language, or culture. As a person deeply committed to human rights and interested in meeting people of various backgrounds, studying abroad in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paolo, Brazil is the opportunity for me to reinforce my passions and be engaged in hands-on learning experiences that I have never encountered before.
