ND Funding for Study Abroad

Notre Dame International believes that study abroad is a unique opportunity for academic, personal, and intercultural growth. With generous support from alumni and donors, NDI Study Abroad is proud to offer funding to students for cultural enrichment opportunities while abroad. The funds below are for students who have been accepted into study abroad programs sponsored by Notre Dame International.

Funds for Academic Year/Semester Study Abroad Programs

A maximum of $400 will be awarded for semester programs. Students may only apply to one fund per semester.

Peyton L. Celedinas Endowment for Excellence for International Studies

The Peyton L. Celedinas Endowment for Excellence for International Studies advances Notre Dame's goals for internationalization by supporting the integration of academic, extracurricular, and cultural learning throughout the study abroad experience. The fund enables internships and other extracurricular activities that enrich the academic and cultural learning of students in non-English speaking NDI study abroad programs located in Europe.

  • Eligible programs: Students studying abroad in the Angers, Berlin, Bologna, Heidelberg, Paris-Sciences Po, or Russia academic year/semester programs.
Palka/Reali Memorial Fund

The Palka/Reali Memorial Fund advances Notre Dame's goals for internationalization by supporting the integration of academic, extracurricular, and cultural learning throughout the study abroad experience. The fund supports extracurricular opportunities for students in NDI study abroad programs that enhance knowledge and awareness of cultures around the world and inspire students to examine their responsibilities as part of the world community.

  • Eligible programs: 
    • Students studying abroad in the Beijing-PKU, Hong Kong-HKUST, Kyoto, Mumbai, Norwich, Oxford, Paris-Sciences Po, São Paulo, Seoul, Shenzhen, Singapore, St. Andrews, Sydney, Tokyo-Keio, or Tokyo-Sophia academic year/semester programs; OR, 
    • Students studying abroad with high financial need, no matter their study abroad program.
Parikh Family Endowment for Excellence for Notre Dame International

The Parikh Family Endowment for Excellence for Notre Dame International advances Notre Dame's goals for internationalization by supporting the integration of academic, extracurricular, and cultural learning throughout the study abroad experience. The fund enables internships and other extracurricular activities that enrich the academic and cultural learning of students in NDI study abroad programs.

  • Eligible programs: Students studying abroad in the Amman, Jerusalem, Kigali, Puebla, Rabat, Santiago, or Stellenbosch academic year/semester programs.

Funds for Summer Study Abroad Programs

All students applying for a NDI summer study abroad program are welcome to apply for the below scholarship. Additionally, any student participating in two NDI study abroad programs within the same summer will automatically receive a $1,000 scholarship.

Daniel, Sharon (Fedor), Mary, John, and James Hunter Family Endowment Fund

The Daniel, Sharon (Fedor), Mary, John, and James Hunter Family Endowment Fund advances Notre Dame's goals for internationalization by supporting the deepening of Notre Dame students' global education. The Fund provides opportunities and access to summer study abroad programs, promoting the integration of international education into Notre Dame students' courses of study.

  • Funding amount: $500-$2,000 per award. Award amount will be determined by the student's financial need and their Go Further Project.
  • Eligible programs: All NDI summer programs

The Go Further Project is a requirement of all recipients of the Daniel, Sharon (Fedor), Mary, John, and James Hunter Family Endowment Fund. The goal of this project is for students who have participated in an NDI summer study abroad program to help increase awareness of summer study abroad programs. Be creative with your project proposal!

Students awarded funding will be required to complete a Go Further Project no later than November 1st of the award year.

Application Information

Students may apply for funds for their semester or summer abroad with the following deadlines:

  • Fall Semester Abroad - September 1
  • Spring Semester Abroad - March 1
  • All Summer Programs - March 15

These deadlines are the same regardless of program start dates.

All students who are awarded funds are required to write a thank you note and submit photos to their study abroad Program Directors. Information about this submission process will be made available to students upon funds being awarded.

Scholarships Available through the Office of Financial Aid

With generous support from donors, if you are a need-based student, you will automatically be considered for the following scholarships available through the Office of Financial Aid:

  • Harry Bainbridge Scholarship (Angers program only)
  • John/Patricia Fitzgerald Scholarship (France programs only) 
  • Fr. George Minamiki, S.J. Scholarship (Japan programs only))
  • Charles F. Roedig, Ph.D. Scholarship (Angers program only)
  • Mary Ann & Patrick Toole Scholarship (Dublin programs only)
  • Mara Rose Fox Memorial Scholarship (Toledo program only)

Award amount will be determined by the student’s financial need.
