Favorite story: One of my favorite study abroad experiences was in Chengdu, where we got the opportunity to help build a house with Habitat for Humanity. We worked in a very rural community for three days and spent time with local people. It was a very rewarding experience and we also had the chance to really immerse in the Chinese culture and witness firsthand what we had been learning about for the past few weeks. It was a once in a lifetime experience, and a nice break from the large cities we had previously visited. Giving back to the community was the best way we could have experienced this.
One piece of advice: Cherish being independent. It can be nerve-wracking to picture yourself in a foreign country, maybe even on the other side of the globe, by yourself, with people you probably don’t know. In the end, some of the best friendships come from experiences like this. It is also good to take time for yourself and learn about a new culture because these are incredible opportunities. The best moments come when you least expect them, so it is good to have an open mind and enjoy everything in the moment.
