Led by Notre Dame psychology professor and South African native, Anre Venter, this 3-week intensive program is designed to incorporate both a cultural dimension and a service component to allow for more meaningful engagement with the host communities. The course entitled "Negative Attitudes: A Cultural, Historical, and Social Psychological Analysis of Racism in South Africa," is intended to introduce you to the country of South Africa from a historical and cultural context. Through the course, guest speakers, cultural excursions and service placements, you will gain a deep understanding of South Africa's challenges as a nation. You will learn about the role sports played in the political transition from the apartheid government to the current democratic model. Cultural activities and excursions in Johannesburg and Cape Town will include: Soweto, Apartheid Museum, Robben Island, and a safari through Kruger National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Along the way, you will also travel the Garden Route which includes Knysna Elephant Park, The Cango Caves, Tsitsikama National Park, and more. You will have several opportunities to engage and interact with the South African people through service placements or activities with local organizations.
