This three-credit, four-week program will take place in Germany. Students will spend time in Berlin, Frankfurt, and Munich with day trips to neighboring cities giving students an opportunity to learn about medicinal chemistry and drug development. The course is a survey of medicinal chemistry and drug development, and is tailored for STEM students interested in careers in medicine. It is ideal for pre-medical and chemistry students as well as those in related fields. The course will begin by briefly looking at ancient plant-based medicines of antiquity and the Middle Ages before highlighting the modern-era discovery of groundbreaking drugs and medicinal practices. Finally culminating with an outlook on both industrial and academic research structure. Students will discuss the process governing contemporary pharmaceutical drug development, including the various phases of clinical research, to help understand how clinical trials leading to drug approvals are conducted today in both Europe and the US.
