Bologna, an elegant city with a population of almost half a million, is the capital of the wealthy and progressive region of Emilia-Romagna in northern Italy. Excellent transportation links make it an ideal base for travel. Venice and Milan are two hours away by train; Ravenna and Florence, just an hour. Bologna is an ancient city settled by the Etruscans. Medieval towers, churches, numerous porticos, covered walkways, and terra-cotta buildings can be found throughout the central section of the city. Located within the old city is the University of Bologna, Europe's oldest institution of higher learning and Italy's top-ranked university. Students in Bologna will enjoy living in the one of the oldest college towns in the world. The University of Bologna (UNIBO) is thoroughly integrated with the old part of the city, and this means that students get to know the city equally as well as the University and the lives of both are inextricably tied. Sipping coffee or tea with your professor at a local cafe, meeting fellow students in one of the countless organizations that permeate UNIBO, and getting to know your Italian roommates are all highlights of this program.
